Why people buy cars in December

You’ve probably seen the holiday-themed television commercials showing a new car wrapped in a ribbon and bow parked in the driveway on Christmas morning. If that’s what you’re giving yourself or someone else this holiday season, the odds are it will be a luxury car.

That’s because December has been the top month for luxury car sales for seven of the past 12 years, according to Edmunds.com. That increase can be contributed, in part, to the heavy commercials and promotions by manufacturers and dealerships as they attempt to clear out existing inventories to make room for next year’s new models.

Experts say car sales are actually better after Christmas, when people have more free time to go car shopping. In fact, the last days of December can be some of the busiest car-buying days of the year, according to Edmunds.

Another reason for the increased sales is that auto leases end at the end of the year and drivers may decide to buy a car instead of lease it.
