Travis Credit Union offers a variety of free seminars throughout the year on a range of subjects designed to help you achieve your personal and financial goals. Here are the seminars occurring in the second quarter of 2016.

HomeBuyer Seminar

Preparation for home ownership begins long before the purchase actually takes place. This seminar covers pre-purchase issues such as budgeting, determining how much house is affordable, saving for a down payment and other costs. You’ll learn about credit reports, managing your debt-to-income ratio, the types of home loans available and the mortgage lending process.


Free shredding event April 9 in Clayton, April 16 in Merced

Identity theft affects millions of Americans each year. To help protect your confidential information from thieves, Travis Credit Union is hosting a free on-site shredding event on April 9 in Clayton and April 16 in Merced.

Contra Costa County residents are invited to bring up to three boxes, or box equivalents, of personal and business documents to be professionally shredded on Saturday, April 9, 2016, from 10 a.m. to noon in the parking lot of Travis Credit Union’s Clayton Branch, 5441 Clayton Road.

We’ll also be holding a shred day in Merced, from 10 a.m. to noon April 16 at our Merced Branch, 1194 West Olive Ave. in Merced.

This is a great opportunity to properly dispose of personal and financial information you no longer want to keep, such as old account statements, outdated health records and old tax information. We’ll also have experts on hand to provide advice and resources for protecting personal information from identity thieves.


Take Charge: Wise Use of Credit Cards

Find out how to use credit cards to your advantage. You’ll learn the benefits and costs of credit cards, how to build a good history, the warning signs of having too much debt, how to avoid credit card fraud and how to get and read your credit report and credit score.


Path to Approval: 3-Part Real Estate Weekly Series

Session 1
This 75-minute session will provide an overview of the home buying process and what to expect. You will learn about the costs involved, payment examples and down payment requirements. You’ll also receive information on obtaining a free copy of your credit report for Session 2. By the end, you’ll be able to determine if today is an appropriate time for you to buy and what you can afford.

Session 2
This 75-minute session picks up where Session 1 left off or can be taken as a standalone course. It provides information on myths and misconceptions of the buying process. In addition, you’ll learn about budgeting and credit requirements. Also, we’ll discuss the rules regarding prior Bankruptcy, Foreclosure and Short Sales. By the end of this session, you will know if your credit score is sufficient to buy a home and if not what you can do to improve it.

Session 3
This 75-minute session picks up where Session 2 left off or can be taken as a standalone course. We’ll go in depth about loan products and which might be the best for you. FHA, VA, Conventional, Jumbo and First Time Buyer programs are explained. You’ll learn about Home Advantage, our Real Estate program, as well as the benefits of working with Travis Credit Union. By the end of this session, you’ll know if today is the right time to take the next step and get preapproved and begin working with a real estate agent.


Take the Wheel: Get the Best Car Deal

This seminar explains how to determine what you can afford when buying a new car. Also, you’ll learn how to deal with dealers, negotiate the best car price and the benefits of buying a used car. Learn how to decipher financing options and warranties, as well as find help if you have warranty problems.


Financial First Aid

(TAFB personnel only) This seminar is designed to help you focus on regaining control of your financial situation through careful financial assessment, expense prioritization and effective negotiation with creditors.
