Employment trends are looking up

Overall, job gains have been good this year, with strong showings in the first quarter. Now you might be wondering what the rest of the year will look like. Fortunately, there is good news for those exploring the job market.

A future reading of job prospects from The Conference Board and its Employment Trends Index (ETI) indicates sharp increases in April, following an increase in March. This change represents a 4.1 percent gain over the course of the last 12 months. “The Employment Trends Index has been expanding rapidly in 2017, suggesting that robust job growth will continue into the summer,” said Gad Levanon, Chief Economist, North America, at The Conference Board. “A tight labor market is about to get much tighter, with solid employment growth occurring at a time when there is almost no growth in the working-age population.”

According to the Board, April’s increase in the ETI was fueled by positive contributions from seven of the eight components tracked for the ETI. This shows real strength, and suggests healthy job growth in the month ahead.
