Home sales up in the Northeast, Midwest

U.S. existing-home sales increased for the second straight month in April, according to new data from the National Association of Realtors.

The NAR reports that this increase was led by a surge in sales in the Midwest and a healthy increase in the Northeast. These regions offset declining sales in the South and West.

Overall, existing-home sales – which are completed transactions that include single-family homes, townhomes, condominiums and co-ops – were up by 1.7 percent in April vs March. Given the sales increase from March, sales are up 6 percent vs April 2015.

Houses are still quite affordable in much of the Midwest region, (as opposed to the West). That, plus today’s still-low mortgage rates, are helping to boost sales there.
