Protecting your home for a vacation

Bags packed, car ready, plane tickets set on your smartphone, and nothing left but to check-in at the airport before it is wheels up to your vacation destination.

Of course, it’s when your flight has departed that you remember the variety of items that were left unlocked at home.

Making sure your home is secure before you leave for an extended time away from the home is essential to ensuring that all valuable possessions are there once you return. Here are some tips that you can use to protect your home before you head out for a vacation:

Secure your important personal documents in a fire-proof safe.

Make sure that in the case of a break-in, fire or other unforeseen catastrophe, your documents are secured inside something that is resistant to fire and water and harder to steal. This includes documents such as your birth certificate, Social Security card, passport, car title, etc.

Ensure all doors and windows are locked

This sounds easier said than done, but it’s honestly the last thing most people do before they leave town. It should be the very first thing you do before zipping up your bags for your trip. By locking all your doors and window before your bags, you’ll ensure the house is secure before your luggage.

Have someone collect the mail and watch the house

It’s important to ensure your mail or newspapers don’t continuously stack up uncollected. That makes your home an easy target for a criminal because it gives the appearance that nobody is home. Have a friend or neighbor check on the place to give the appearance someone is watching the home.
