Tech savvy ways to save on school supplies

This is a busy and expensive time of year for Travis Credit Union parents. The cost to get kids ready for the classroom goes up every year. When you take everything into account – clothing, footwear, book bag, lunch bag, groceries and snacks, you’re easily looking at a few hundred dollars per child. If you’re in a school district that encourages students to bring their own devices to class (i.e. smartphones, tablets and laptops) you’re looking at a substantial chunk of change. Here are a few resources to help you save money and foot the bill without breaking the bank.

When it comes to saving money, there’s an app for that!

1. Cartwheel (Target), Free

Get 5-50 percent off the regular price of many popular items. Add your coupons on the app as you shop and use the barcode on the app at the register to claim your savings. Be on the lookout from July-Sept. for Back to School Savings on supplies, snacks and clothing items for all ages.

2. RedLaser, Free

RedLaser is a smartphone barcode scanning app. You can scan product and locate the best deals on that product. If you find an item for less at a competing retailer, you can ask the store to match that price. There’s no price match guarantee, but many retailers will when you ask!

3. Wal-Mart Savings Catcher, Free

You can scan your receipts from the app and if the retailer is able to locate a lower advertised price on an identical item, you can receive the difference on a Wal-Mart eGift Card.

4. The Coupons App, Free

Provides promo codes for stores. You can save and share the coupons you find.

5. Office Depot App, Free

You can get weekly deals, coupons, etc. via this free mobile app.

6. Pricegrabber, Free

You can search via the app for the specific item you are looking for and it helps you find the single cheapest store that carries that item you are looking for.
