Don't be money stressed this holiday season

With the Thanksgiving festivities behind us, many are gearing up for the holidays in full force. You might be through stuffing your refrigerator with leftovers just in time to start filling your home with holiday cheer.

Here are some tips to help you stick to your holiday budget this year:

Make your list and check it twice

Maybe every single person in your family doesn’t necessarily need a wrapped gift from you on Christmas morning. So you may not be able to afford a gift for everyone – that’s fine! Even though you’d love to share the holiday spirit with your loved ones, this shouldn’t mean going into debt. Make a list of your desired gift recipients – include immediate family, in-laws, coworkers, neighbors or whoever. Then prioritize your list by who deserves a gift card versus a batch of your gingerbread cookies instead. You can also cut down on costs by giving a joint gift to a couple or family, such as board games or a movie set.

Don’t just think gifts

When creating your holiday budget, don’t just think gifts. Although gift shopping might be the bulk of your holiday spending, it is important to factor in the costs of decorations, food, travel and those pricey limited edition holiday lattes. These purchases can add up quickly so it is important to prioritize your spending and be sure to account for all of these variables when budgeting for the holiday season.

Remember what you owe

While it’s easy to get wrapped up in the season of giving, you don’t want to be giving too much. Remember, the holiday season is no exception to put off your other financial obligations. You want to be sure that you crunch the numbers for your regular monthly expenses before making too many holiday-related purchases. Always remember what you owe and keep this at the forefront of your mind so you can spend within your means this holiday season.
