Where exactly are the jobs?

The economy turned in a good performance in June 2017, at least in terms of jobs. About 222,000 new jobs emerged during this month, greatly exceeding expectations. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment growth has averaged about 180,000 jobs per month thus far this year, in line with the average monthly gain of 187,000 jobs in 2016. Here are the economic sectors reportedly hiring the most workers, according to this data:

Health care

In June 2017, health care added 37,000 jobs. Employment increased in ambulatory health care services and hospitals. This industry added an average of 24,000 jobs per month in the first half of 2017, compared with a monthly average of 32,000 jobs in 2016.

Social assistance

Social assistance employment increased by 23,000 jobs in June, while adding 115,000 employment opportunities over the last 12 months. Within the industry, employment continued to trend up in individual, family and child daycare services. Social assistance has added 115,000 jobs over the last 12 months.

Finance and business services

Employment in financial activities has continued to rise in recent months and has grown by 169,000 over the year. Securities, commodity contracts and investments added 5,000 jobs over the month. Meanwhile employment in professional and business services continued this rise, growing by 624,000 jobs since 2016.
