How to score a summer internship

Spring is here – meaning finals are around the corner and internship applications are open. Here are some tips to help you have a successful and employed summer.

Use campus resources

A visit to the internship and career center will help you get started. Attend resume boosting workshops, interview prep classes, internship/career fairs and whatever else your campus has to offer. These are great opportunities to build your professional skills and network with your peers and potentially future employers.

Build an online presence

As you begin to enter the working world, remember to strengthen your online profiles. Now is a good time to create a LinkedIn account and build your professional network. Potential employers often search job candidates online, so be sure all profiles are polished and professional. In addition, do a thorough sweep of your social media profiles, removing any inappropriate photos and status updates.

Follow instructions

Managing tight deadlines on top of your current course load might get overwhelming, but don’t let this affect your applications. Even though you might be in a time crunch, you don’t want to come off as a lazy applicant by submitting the same version of your resume and cover letter to different employers. Take the time to tailor your resume and cover letter to each unique position. In addition, don’t assume that all employers have the same application process. Some companies may require a PDF version of your resume via email, while other employers will have you fill out an application in an online database. Pay close attention to submission details because companies prefer an employee that can follow directions.

Apply, apply and apply

The internship market can be competitive, especially during the summer months. It’s important to keep your options open by applying for as many internships as possible. Spend some time researching different companies in different fields. Attend job fairs, search online job boards and explore LinkedIn to help you find the right fit. Don’t limit yourself!
