More proof that credit unions beat banks

When it comes to the business of financial institutions, it appears that credit unions continue to have the upper hand. A recent article in the Credit Union Times was full of information that suggests credit unions have a big edge over banks when it comes to people-friendly practices, including lower fees for checking accounts.

The article discussed recent surveys on fees, and included data from a survey. That survey showed banks charged, on average, $159 a year for checking account maintenance, compared to an average of $24 per year for credit union.

The survey found that credit unions charge anywhere from $1 to $10 per month for maintenance fees. The report also noted that as banks continue to raise fees, credit unions work hard to keep fees low for their members. Overall, the survey found checking account maintenance fees were topping out at $120 annually.
