Where to find tax help

Tax season can be a hectic time, but you don’t have to go through it alone. Here are a few sources that will help take the stress out of your tax filing.

Professional tax preparers

There are various types of professional tax preparers: enrolled agents (EAs), attorneys, certified public accountants (CPAs), to name a few. Keep in mind you’ll be disclosing a lot of personal information and details of your financial life, so be sure you choose a professional you can trust. The IRS shares some tips on how to choose your tax preparer wisely.

Use tax software

Tax software programs are available no matter what your income level. You can expect these programs to file your taxes electronically, calculate your taxes, credits and deductions. At Travis Credit Union, we’ve partnered with TurboTax to provide our members with free access to the basic program. Visit our TurboTax offer for details.

VITA program

Travis Credit Union has announced plans for 2017’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. This program offers free tax help to low- to moderate-income taxpayers who need assistance preparing their own tax returns. VITA is a free service that is open to the community. Registering is easy, just dial 2-1-1 after January 16 and ask for a Travis Credit Union VITA tax appointment. Check out our VITA article for more information.
