Crossovers lead the new vehicle charge

New vehicle sales were up again in February, and the cross utility vehicle (CUV) segment took the biggest share, according to new data from the National Automobile Dealers Association.

NADA said that U.S. light-vehicle sales topped 1.3 million in February, with sales up 9.3% from January, and up 5.4% vs. February 2014. General Motors beat all other automakers in terms of market share, with its GMC brand in particular gaining sales. Toyota was the #2 maker, while Ford took the #3 spot.

With gas prices down across the country, it’s not surprising that pickups, SUVs and crossovers gained market share, among vehicle types. Pickups took 25.8% of sales in February, which was up from 25.2% a year earlier.

NADA said that the SUV segment saw the biggest gain in market share – rising from 12% in February 2014 to 13.2% last month. It was the cross utility vehicle (CUV) segment, however, that took the top spot, with a 28.8% share of sales. That was up from 28% last year.
