As a member-owned, not-for-profit cooperative, Travis Credit Union’s Board of Directors is elected by its membership to be careful stewards of the resources put in their care. Richard Word and Sal Vaca are both graduates of the year-long Volunteer-at-Large Training Program, which requires a year-long commitment and includes monthly classes that cover every aspect of the financial institution, from strategy to technology and risk management.

Richard Word
We are pleased to announce that Richard Word has joined the Board, filling the seat vacated by Patricia Moreno in May 2021. Word has 30 years of law enforcement experience. He began his law enforcement career at the Oakland Police Department in 1984, where he eventually became a Chief of Police. In 2004 Word joined the Vacaville Police Department as Chief of Police, where he served until his retirement in 2013. For several years Word was an adjunct faculty member for Los Rios Community College and an associate faculty member at the University of Phoenix. Word has served on the Board of Directors of the Vacaville Neighborhood Boys and Girls Club and the Opportunity House, reflecting his commitment to the wellbeing of the community.

"Joining the Travis Credit Union’s Board is an honor. During my 9 years as Vacaville’s Chief of Police and as a 14-year resident of Vacaville, I saw first-hand the organization’s commitment to the Vacaville community. I also support their Awesome Cause,” said newly elected Board Member Richard Word. "While we in the Police Department worked to keep Vacaville safe, TCU’s work to uplift the lives of our local residents through financial wellness was more than complementary. Simply put, TCU’s member-driven cause made our work in the Police Department easier. They are good neighbors and partners."

He served as the Executive Director of the Richmond Workforce Development Board for the last 18 years where he established many award-winning programs including the nationally-recognized Richmond BUILLD Program. Sal Vaca has established a track record for developing and implementing innovative and effective private/public partnerships and received the FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award for establishing programs & services that help reduce violence and crime. Vaca has worked diligently to ensure East Bay residents have more employment opportunities by creating education programs with the City of Richmond, offering quality training, and encouraging economic development in the community.

"I am thrilled to join the Governing Board of Travis Credit Union at this exciting time for the organization. As TCU celebrates its 70th anniversary, I see the difference the organization makes through its Awesome Cause in all five core counties,” said Sal Vaca. “In addition to offering scholarships, financial education workshops, and supporting hundreds of non-profit organizations, this credit union has demonstrated its commitment to its members and the community. I look forward to working with my fellow Board Members and the Senior Management Team to further the Awesome Cause and serve our members."

Patricia Moreno, who served as chair for the past seven years and who has been a board member since 2004, is now an official Director Emeritus. A Director Emeritus acts as an advisor to the Board of Directors, augmenting the board's knowledge and experience. A Director Emeritus does not vote when the Board makes an official decision.

In April 2021 Deborah Aspling was elected as a Board Chair, joining Vice Chairman Kevin Burke, Treasurer Doug Beaumont, and Board Secretary Mary Coburn.

Non-officer Board Directors are as follows: Len Augustine, Dee Alarcon, JP Kirkley, Brian Howell, and newly elected Richard Word. Tim Murrill remains an Associate Director, alongside Associate Member Sal Vaca. Tom Kulinski remains a Director Emeritus and is joined by Patricia Moreno.

The Supervisory Committee remains unchanged: Tim Truesdale (Chair), Johanna Benker (member), and Kari Mulholland (member).
