Automated Teller Machine (ATM) Safety

ATMs have become the target of criminal opportunities for robbery, purse theft, and other personal crimes. The following is a list of suggestions to help reduce your vulnerability and discourage criminal opportunities.

General rules and suggestions about using an ATM:
  • Treat your ATM card like cash. Always keep your card in a safe place and store it in the protective sleeve.
  • Keep your Personal Identification Number (PIN) secret. Your ATM card will only work with your PIN. Never write your PIN on your card, and don't store it near your card.
  • Never give out information about your PIN over the telephone.
  • Report a lost or stolen card immediately.
  • Check your receipts against your monthly statements to guard against ATM fraud.

When at an ATM:

  • Make sure the ATM area is well lit.
  • Use drive-up ATMs whenever possible.
  • If you are accessing the machine at night, have someone accompany you.
  • Stand directly in front of a walk-up ATM, so no one can see the numbers you input.
  • Don’t hesitate to cancel the transaction and leave.
  • Never reveal your PIN to anyone.
  • Do not write your PIN on your ATM card.
  • Do not leave your receipts at the ATM site.
  • Never give ATM account information over the phone.
  • Do not stay at the ATM to count your cash.
  • Keep your receipts to verify your account activity.
